What Is HPV?
The full form of HPV is Human Papilloma Virus. It is like any other virus which can affect different organs of the body. More than 100 strains of the virus have been identified but of these only about 14 have been classified as being high risk for cancers.
It is the most common sexually transmitted viral infection and almost 80% of sexually active adults will have this infection at some point of time.
Although majority of infections are asymptomatic and resolve spontaneously but few may persist for long time and cause anogenital warts, precancerous and cancerous lesions of the genital and anal regions.
Prevention
Vaccination is the most effective and best strategy for prevention.
Best age is 9-14 years although can be given till 26-45 years of age depending on the vaccine.
Why Early Vaccination Is Important
The immune response is better at an early age.
The child has not yet been exposed to the virus.
Side Effects of HPV Vaccine
The side effects noted are just like for other vaccines like pain at site of injection and fever.
Types of Vaccines Available
Basically a 4 strain (quadrivalent) and a 9 strain( nanovalent) vaccine is available.
Before 14 years a 2 dose schedule is recommended and after 15 years 3 doses are recommended.
