Constipation In Kids

Generally constipation is thought to be a problem of adults and elderly but it is quite common among kids as well and has increased in the recent years due to changes in diet and lifestyle.
WHAT IS CONSTIPATION?
Passage of infrequent (less than 3 times/week) stool
Passing of hard and dry stools associated with pain or straining
The child may stand in a corner, tighten and cross his legs
Complaint of stomach pain
Blood on the surface of the stool
Traces of liquid or potty may be noticed on the underwear
KEY CAUSES
Withholding Behavior
The child tries to hold the stool when the urge to pass stool is there or a strong bowel movement is there. This can be due
Fear of sitting in the toilet
Fear of passing stool because of the pain if away from home or in school
Improper Toilet Training
If toilet training is forced on a child and that is too very early, it sometimes becomes a battle between the parent and the child. The child tries to voluntarily hold the urge to pass stool and this slowly becomes becomes an involuntary habit.
Diet
Not enough fibre in diet. Some good sources of fibre in diet are whole grains & cereals, fruits, vegetables etc.
Changes in Routine
Starting school
Travel
Changes in weather
Other causes include medication, cow milk allergy, family history and medical condition.
PREVENTIVE STEPS
High fibre diet with lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grain cereals
Increase liquid intake (water)
Disciplined toilet routine
Physical activity
Support and Reassurance
Medications for short time after consultation
