Common Cold Among Children


Common Cold is among the most common reason for visit to a doctor. There are about 100 different types of rhinoviruses along with other viruses such as influenza and sarscov2 which can cause symptoms like common cold. Since there are many varieties of viruses, young children tend to get infected multiple times in a year.

Generally 6-8 episodes of common cold can occur in kids below the age of 6 years


Symptoms

  • Nasal Congestion or Sneezing

  • Clear or Creamy nasal discharge

  • Mild fever for less than 3 days

  • Sore Throat

  • Loss of appetite

  • Headache

  • Symptoms last about 5-7 days


What You Can Do

  • Use Saline Nasal Drops

  • Increase Fluid Intake

  • Paracetamol can be given for fever

  • No antibiotics required


When To Be Concerned

  • High grade fever lasting more than 3 days

  • Breathing Difficulty

  • Ear pain or Discharge

  • Increased Coughing

  • Thick yellow or green nasal discharge

  • Not eating or extreme lethargy
