Everything You Should Know About MPox

MPox is a viral infection of certain animal species such as monkeys, rodents, squirrels and other small mammals, sometimes affecting humans as well.


How does it spread in humans?

  1. By close contact with infected animal for example by handling raw meat, coming in contact with saliva or body fluids of infected animal

  2. From a bite or scratch of infected animal

  3. By touching contaminated surfaces

  4. By coming in close contact with someone suffering from the disease such as their infected clothes or bedding, skin-to-skin contact, mouth-to-skin or mouth-to-mouth contact. It also spreads by sexual contact

  5. It can also spread by respiratory droplets when there is a prolonged face-to-face contact like breathing very close or talking very close to the infected person

Symptoms

  1. Fever

  2. Fatigue and muscle pain

  3. Rash which can develop into blisters. The rash generally starts from the face and can involve the palms, soles and other parts. It can be painful and sometimes itchy.

  4. Swollen lymph nodes

  5. Sore throat

  6. Headache


Prevention

  1. Isolation of the infected person and his close contacts

  2. Disinfect contaminated surfaces

  3. Frequent washing and sanitizing your hands

  4. Avoid touching your face nose and eyes

  5. Get vaccinated when the vaccine is available
