Common Condition in Children


Diarrhoea

This is one of the most common problem encountered in among all age groups of children. Parents tend to get very worried if the child's frequency of passing stool increases. In this condition loose stools may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, fever.

The child may feel weak and get dehydrated due to loss of fluids.


Causes

  • Infections: Viral or bacterial

  • Mal-absorption disorders

  • Food Intolerance


Of the above, viral infection is the most common and this settles down without the need of antibiotics.


What to do?


  • The main aim should be to prevent dehydration. Keep the child hydrated by offering plenty of fluids such as WHO ORS, Rice Water, Buttermilk, Coconut Water

  • DO NOT give sugary drinks such as juices or energy drinks. Keep breastfeeding going if the baby is on breastfeed

  • Keep a watch on the frequency and amount of urine the baby is passing


When to Consult Your Doctor


  • Generally viral diarrhoea lasts for 3-5 days but consult your pediatrician in case you notice blood in stools

  • High grade fever

  • If the child is very lethargic and sleepy and develops sunken eyes

  • Non passing of urine in last 6-7 hours

  • Number of stools is more than 5-6 per day

  • Abdominal pain or severe cramps

  • Vomiting persistently
